There were some very interesting ones that were given to us when we were little to make us love books, do you remember them? They were the kind of books that you could interact with. Of course, they were the kind of story books that appealed more to children, at least as a means of play. I came across several different types of these books, with lots of visuals and a theatrical style.
Let's look at the type of book first. Pop-up books, which are books that greet you on the vertical plane by creating a three-dimensional atmosphere when you open them. Sometimes the characters described in the book and sometimes the whole structure on the page have been designed to give the third dimension by unfolding. It is certainly an extraordinary experience.
Actually, the main subject I want to deal with today is a type of book called a tunnel book, which really does give the effect of being in a tunnel. I keep referring to them as books, but of course they can also be seen in the form of magazines, pamphlets and so on.
Although the tunnel book style catches the attention of children, there are also examples in old paintings. If you look through the holes in the book, you can see all the way to the back. The most important feature is its structure, which allows it to be studied layer by layer. Like a theatre stage, there are other layers that fill the back of the stage as well as those that stand out at the front.
Their construction dates back to ancient times. In the past they were sold as toys among the people or as guides to introduce interesting structures/places.
I came across such an interesting video.
The last example is not really a book. In fact, if we were to present the above in visual form only, it would be little more than an antique toy (and now a souvenir). However, as I found it equally, if not more, interesting, and as I stumbled upon it and saw it for the first time, I thought it appropriate to include it.
Although it was popular between 1820 and 1850, there is one tool that would still be impressive if it were available today, and it is called the Polyorama Panoptique. This is actually like looking into a camera and seeing an optical reflection of the image inside the closed box.
Have a look at the video, which I loved and couldn't understand at first.
Of course, with a little thought, it becomes clear that what is going on here is actually a matter of using light to reflect two different states of a scene. The thin or cut parts of the paper of the picture (printed or drawn) prepared for the scene create this effect because they allow the light to fill in. Of course, when our brain logically completes the illumination of the lamp, the sun or any other object we can associate with light, it feels as if the day has suddenly changed. It is a clever design that we cannot say contains an illusion.
This kind of interaction, which makes them feel ahead of their time, is a different experience for everyone. They also serve as a mini-scientific experiment. These three books, toys or gadgets (or all of them together, as the case may be), which have aspects related to geometry, optics and physics, are conscious representatives of both science and imagination.
Thank you for the comment. I am glad that I added the videos, the article would be incomplete without them.
As you mentioned, this shows the variety of art whether useful or not to others or whether timely or not. I found them fascinating and wanted to talk about them.
In time, I began to understanding when to appreciate a piece of artwork or any kind of work that requires a physical labour or a scientific background -although looks simple but not easy to implement.
I liked your contributions on the meaning of art, improved the quality of the general narrative of the article in my opinion.
In the past, I never used to be able to comment on articles because I believed that I had to have prior knowledge about that subject. I also didn't have anything to write about. But after I entered the medium, I started to comment on articles and ideas started to come to my mind about that topic, even though I had no prior knowledge about that topic. That's why I started commenting at length on every article by you and many other writers.
I don't just want my articles to be read and gain followers.
My primary goal is to chat, to share with each other, to learn from you. As I always say. I improve myself as i comment.
