Five Meditative Activities I Use to Enhance My Writing Sessions

Writing is not just a source of fun, it is a responsibility that challenges and teaches. However, there are times when I feel exhausted and drained. At such times, I have discovered various meditative activities that help me regain my focus and intention to write. Sometimes you find them out of the blue, and sometimes you realise they have been there for you all along.

Engaging in Chores

Contrary to popular belief, I do find comfort in doing chores, as long as I choose to do them in the moment. Focusing on tasks like cleaning or organising allows my mind to shift away from writing and gives it a much-needed break. Vacuuming a room, tidying up or even cooking can be therapeutic and create mental space for creativity. In fact, I exaggerate by doing them every once in a while like a mini spring-clean.

Connecting with Nature

Although I’m not a keen gardener, taking the time to examine plants, water them, photograph their beauty or even harvest them (what a joy!) reminds me of the importance of patience and effort. Watching them grow is a gentle warning that great things often take time and dedication.

Enjoying a Walk

Walking is a simple yet powerful activity that provides a change of scenery and a change of mindset. Walking doesn’t always clear my mind, but it redirects my thoughts and provides a refreshing break from my writing process. I love how the walk becomes a blur in my memory as I get lost in my thoughts or absorbed in a phone call. How a 25-minute walk becomes a 15-minute void. It’s a temporary escape that recharges my mental energy. In fact, I usually complain about the lack of this activity in my life.

Having a Coffee Break

Despite being an introvert, going out for coffee, either alone or with friends, is something I really enjoy. I read a book or think about my articles and upcoming story chapters until I get to the cafe, but the moment I step inside, my focus shifts from work-related thoughts to the company of friends. Engaging in conversation with them allows me to take my mind off writing and fully embrace the present moment. It’s a precious time that provides a temporary respite from the challenges of writing. It reminds me of the joy of being social and having friends to talk to.

Practicing Yoga

Although I haven’t been able to practice yoga recently due to time constraints, I have experienced its benefits in the past thanks to my girlfriend. For me, yoga is not only a physical exercise, but also a mental and emotional journey. The practice of calming the mind and stretching the body brings a sense of peace and improves overall wellbeing. It has been a powerful tool to release pent-up frustrations and find inner peace. I hope to resume my yoga practice soon.

By paying attention to ourselves or shifting our focus elsewhere, we can all find ways to relax and recharge after demanding work sessions. These mental meditations, whether through housework, nature, walking, socialising or yoga, provided valuable moments of respite and contributed to a healthier and more productive writing routine.
