I don’t usually have a multidisciplinary approach to my work, and when I’m faced with a backlog of tasks, I can get either frustrated or overwhelmed. But being busy once in a while is not as bad as it sounds. Especially if we put time and effort into things we enjoy doing.
There’s a saying that I agree with, even though I haven’t been able to fully integrate it into my life, you know, “work at a job you love so much that you see it as a hobby, not a job, and do it with joy”. In my opinion, it does not even have to be a purely financial job. I know that the world we live in constantly pushes us to get the fruits of our labour, and that is usually right. But there are points where we can go beyond that.
With reference to the statement above, I try to put something together with the experience, curiosity and excitement of reading and writing in my life. I try to create a logical effort by getting help and ideas from the common points of my hobbies. Medium is one of them, and it makes me happy. I see my writing and reading here as a mental investment, and I think it is even more important to share it with others.
It is also such that there may be points that you like to deal with in other places (hobby, entertainment aspect), but somehow you manage to pull it into your own field (what you do regularly, your job, your main talent).
There is a mobile game that I have been playing for the last few months. It’s the only game I’ve played, and I don’t really like playing on my phone, but the structure of the game appealed to me because it felt like I was being thrown into a fantasy story. Then the months went by and the communication between players increased. As I progressed in the game, I found myself helping newcomers all the time. At some point I realised that I had gained some recognition.
I spent some more time on the structure of the game and realised that I could have a good time both in and out of the game. Then I met other players with similar interests and we became a global community. Over time, I was accepted as an influential person in the community, and I didn’t go out of my way for any of that. Because the main thing was this: I did all these things gladly and willingly. Besides, I had nothing to gain, except for having fun…

When it comes to games and entertainment, people’s general attitude can be less serious. But games are necessary. Without realising it, we are somehow stuck in an entertainment element during the day. Although having fun sounds like laughing and being positive, I don’t think it’s exactly like that. A series with horror elements, a tragedy play, your attempt at a hobby you were never good at… They are all forms of entertainment. For me, it was stepping into a fictional play. What I couldn’t predict was the conversations, the friendships and the sincere atmosphere afterwards.
Given how stifling and mind-numbing it is to work in an environment where we feel worse and worse, I don’t think we can buy what I’m talking about in material terms.
Now I would like to remind you of one last thing that you may have forgotten. If you regret the time you spend having fun, stop thinking that way right now. All the time you spend doing this is important and contributes to you. Of course, it is necessary to set limits, it should not become an addiction.
Time is undoubtedly the most important element in our work, hobbies and entertainment. What do we all say when we are working on a favourite subject? “How quickly it went by!” If we can say that, aren’t we doing the right thing? If the activity we are engaged in makes us feel good, what is wrong?
Let’s get back on track and finish this article. I’m currently busy creating an information site for the game. In other words, I’m trying to provide information about everything in the game, share it with everyone, and make the time they spend having fun more efficient and enjoyable. And as you can imagine, I’m having a blast doing it. A volunteer task that I do by writing, a game that I love to play, sharing it with people and informing them and making everyone’s time more enjoyable… I think that’s fantastic.
How does it feel to be involved in activities that you would rather do on a voluntary basis? It could be working in a soup kitchen, helping a cleaning group, caring for an elderly family member, reading a story to a group of children, taking the initiative to surprise a friend or creating a guide for others — what you can do as a volunteer may be more than you imagine.
I think we forget to act without expecting anything in return. I’m not talking about letting people take advantage of us. I’m talking about consciously, curiously, eagerly, excitedly getting involved in a job/activity knowing that we won’t get anything concrete in return. I think this feeling should have its own name.
